Tax year and non-savings income

Savings, dividends, reliefs and payments

Before relying on the result This calculator assumes the figures are taxable in full and that the standard Personal Allowance rules apply. It does not calculate business losses, property finance-cost tax reductions, Blind Person’s Allowance, Marriage Allowance, foreign income, chargeable-event gains or specialised reliefs.

Calculation method

What the Self Assessment calculator includes

The calculator orders income as non-savings income, savings income and dividends. It then applies the Personal Allowance, any taper above £100,000, the starting rate for savings, Personal Savings Allowance, dividend allowance and the applicable tax bands for the selected year.

Gross relief-at-source pension contributions and gross Gift Aid donations reduce adjusted net income and extend the basic-rate and higher-rate limits. Zero-rate savings and dividend amounts still use tax-band capacity.

This calculator does not include

  • Class 2 or Class 4 National Insurance.
  • Student or postgraduate loan repayments.
  • High Income Child Benefit Charge.
  • Capital Gains Tax.
  • Marriage Allowance or Blind Person’s Allowance.
  • Foreign Tax Credit Relief or treaty claims.
  • Scottish Income Tax rates and bands.
  • Late-payment interest, filing penalties or surcharges.
  • Payments on account becoming due for the following tax year.

When a simple estimate is not enough

Ask us to check before filing

A Self Assessment calculation can change where reliefs, ownership, loss claims, National Insurance, pension limits or HMRC adjustments apply.

Property income

Finance-cost tax reductions, jointly owned income, brought-forward losses and capital expenditure can affect the result.

Self-employment

Allowable expenses, capital allowances, trading losses and Class 4 National Insurance require separate calculations.

Dividends and company income

Dividend tax depends on total income, company distributions and the tax bands occupied after other income.

Pensions and Gift Aid

Relief-at-source, net-pay and employer contributions have different effects and annual-allowance rules may apply.

Foreign income or residence

Residence, FIG relief, treaties, foreign tax credits, remittances and exchange rates are outside this calculator.
